Help support your child's school!

Please CONTRIBUTE to help us reach our fundraising goal of 100% participation from our families.

The Lab Middle School Direct Appeal is our singular, most important fundraiser. The Direct Appeal is the lifeline that allows Lab Middle to offer the extensive afterschool programs and fund the necessary expenses that make our school the vibrant community that it is. Without your continued support, these programs cannot not exist!

Afterschool Athletics & Sports

At Lab, every child has the opportunity to find his/her inner athlete. Thanks to funds raised by the parent body, all athletic programs are free and all students are eligible. Tryouts are required for basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer. All teams are co-ed, except basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer, where girls and boys each have their own teams. Practices are in the Lab Gymnasium; meets and competitions with other middle school teams are around Manhattan. The golf team practices at Chelsea Piers. Lab Athletics, led by Athletic Director Charles Jessup, culminates in the spring when every child is encouraged to come out for the track and field team. Participation is over a 100 strong and growing.

Fall

Girls Soccer/Boys Soccer

In addition to playing against other middle schools in Lower Manhattan, the Lab Soccer team emphasizes the building-blocks approach in skills progression with an equal focus on fun and fitness. Tryouts are required to join the teams.

Lab Runs: Track

Groups of Labbies can be seen running all over the neighborhood as they train for track meets organized by New York Road Runners Club’s Youth Runners.

Lab Runs: Cross Country

The cross country team gives young runners a chance to train and compete in area events, including a 5K race held in December. Lab partners with New York Road Runners Club’s Youth Runners program to make the events possible.

JV/Varsity Flag Football

Flag Football teaches children the basic skills of football without the tackling. Ultimately student athletes get the opportunity to participate in games against other teams. This co-ed sport promotes fitness and fun. Go Gators!

Winter

Girls Basketball/Boys Basketball

Basketball has been a long tradition at Lab Middle School. Tryouts are required to join the teams, but everyone is welcome to cheer on the Gators as they play other teams around the city.

Lab Runs: Winter Conditioning/Training

This program, run in conjunction with the New York Road Runners Club’s Youth Runners program, allows students the opportunity to train together once a week, stay in shape over the winter and even participate in a few road races.

Golf

New in 2009-2010, Lab’s Golf Team is run in collaboration with a program called First Tee, which provides learning facilities and programs at Chelsea Piers to our players.

Table Tennis

Also new in 2010 is Lab’s Table Tennis team in cooperation with C.H.A.M.P.S., the New York City Department of Education’s Middle School Sport and Fitness League. The team plays against other middle schools in Lower Manhattan.

Spring

Lab Runs: Track and Field

This is the sport for runners, jumpers and throwers of all distances. It may be the first time student athletes get to throw a shot put or run a 200 meter race. Coaches get the team fit and ready and the meets, in association with the New York Road Runners Club’s Youth Runners, are fun for everyone. Manhattan and City championships are held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Softball and Baseball

New in 2010 are a girls softball team and a boys baseball team. Tryouts for the teams take place in April, and practices are twice a week.

Today is: 02/23/12
