With its stellar test scores, imaginative curriculum, and devoted teachers, Lab School for Collaborative Studies attracts some of the best students from Manhattan. Lab consistently ranks among the City’s top public schools and has been featured in every edition of New York City’s Best Public Middle Schools by Clara Hemphill and the staff of InsideSchools.org, an independent project of Advocates for Children of New York.
Out of 1,249 public middle schools in New York State, Lab ranks 14th in Math and English scores. The school earned an “A” in the 2009-2010 Progress, Performance and Environment Report by the New York City Department of Education, and is nationally recognized for its innovative special education program where every student receives a top-level education. Lab is an optimistic place where compassion and collaboration are as important as academic achievement; indeed, the school thrives on its diversity. Because middle school-aged children are developing their identities as people and as learners, the school’s arc of instruction is to challenge and support. At Lab, students are thoughtfully engaged. A member of the City’s Empowerment Schools Association, Lab is able to customize its curriculum. The interdisciplinary Humanities program, for instance, is a labor of love, developed internally over the past five years by teachers and educational leaders who fine-tune it weekly. “It’s not just about the content, but the art of understanding middle schoolers,” says Principal Megan Adams. “Our teachers are mentors.”
